The shade of restorative materials is very important for successful restoration
esthetically harmonized with natural tooth.
The quantitative values of the shade of available restorative materials are not labeled
and esthetically harmonized restorations can not be achieved by only several shades.
The purpose of this study was to quantitatively identify the shade of several composite
resins and glass-ionomer cement, and to compare each color difference.
Three specimens for each shade of 1 kind of glass-ionomer cement(Fuji-Ionomer Type
¥±), 1 kind of self-curing resin (Restodent) and 3 kinds of light-curing resins(Pekalux,
Durafill and Silux) were prepared.
Each shade of the prepared specimens was measured with the colorimeter 3 times and
their color differences were analyzed.
The results were as follow :
1. Although each of the light-curing resin sets has the same shade code, considerable
color difference was shown according to difference of the manufacture.
2. The shade ranges of L, a and b values of the tested esthetic restorative materials
were between 38.14 and 63.63, 1.07 and 5.38, and -3.62 and 11.22.
3. In the case of glass-ionomer cement, the shade type No. 23 had the highest
yellowness value in comparison to the other tested materials and had lower whiteness
value than the shade type No.21 and 22.
4. In the case of restodent, incorporation of the opaque powder resulted in the
increasing of L, a and b values, and increased the lightness values and changed shade
to yellow-red. Also incorporation of the opaque powder increased whiteness value.
5. Silulx showed relatively lower yellowness when compared with the materials of the
same color codes of other light - curing composite resin sets.
6. Pekalux B had the lowest whiteness value of the tested materials.
The paper suggests that the restoration should be ideally harmonised with natural teeth
through more various shade development of esthetic restorative materials and effective
combination of those shades.
